Muladhara, the Power of Returning to Yourself

Chakras are energy centers that run through our body and are linked to different aspects of physical, emotional, and spiritual life.

Muladhara, also known as the root chakra, is the first of these centers and the foundation of our entire energy system.

Located at the base of the spine, in the perineum, Muladhara represents our foundations: security, survival, the connection to the earth and to our body. It is the place from which we begin.

When this chakra is balanced, we feel grounded, stable, and confident. When it is blocked, fear, anxiety, and the feeling of not belonging or of "floating" aimlessly appear.

What Muladhara represents

  • Element: Earth
  • Associated color: Red
  • Related organs: Intestines, feet, legs, adrenal glands
  • Linked emotions: Fear, insecurity, sense of rootedness or disconnection

Muladhara reminds us that we cannot grow if we are not rooted. Just as a tree needs to sink its roots to spread its branches, we too need security, belonging, and stability in order to evolve.

Signs of imbalance in the root chakra

When it is blocked or out of balance, you may experience:

  • Constant fear, anxiety, financial or emotional insecurity
  • A sense of disconnection from the body or the present moment
  • Lack of energy, chronic fatigue
  • Discomfort in the legs, hips, or lower back
  • Intestinal disorders, constipation

When it is in balance, you feel:

  • Emotional and physical stability
  • Trust in life and in yourself
  • Active vital energy
  • Full presence in the body
  • A healthy relationship with money and security

How to activate Muladhara

Activating the root chakra means returning to the body, to the earth, to the basics, to the essential. Here are some effective practices:

1. Yoga poses for grounding

  • Eka Pada Padasana

This pose challenges your balance and connects you with the here and now. By holding yourself on one leg, you activate the deep muscles and body awareness from the base. Imagine your foot rooting firmly into the earth, as if growing roots.

  • Virabhadrasana (Warrior Pose)

Steadiness, direction, and presence. The warrior evokes the courage to move forward with feet firmly planted. By extending your arms and opening your chest, you release stagnant energy and strengthen your inner foundations.

  • Vashistasana (Side Plank Pose)

Although it is an arm pose, its true power lies in the connection it demands between your center and your base. Supporting yourself with one arm and one foot awakens your inner strength and builds deep body confidence, key to balancing the root chakra.

  • Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Equestrian Pose / Low Lunge)

This pose stimulates the hip area, the lower abdomen, and the legs. By opening space in the pelvis while maintaining firmness in your support, you connect with your vitality and the instinct to move forward without losing stability.

  • Sukhasana

A simple pose, yet deeply grounding. By sitting with an upright spine and crossed legs, you bring your attention to the base of the spine. You can accompany it with visualizations or the mantra LAM, feeling how the energy descends and settles.

2. Visualization and meditation

You can sit comfortably and visualize a red lotus spinning at the base of your spine, emitting a warm, deep light. Feel how this energy roots you, calms you, and holds you.

You can also mentally repeat the mantra LAM, which is associated with the root chakra, accompanying your breathing.

3. Nutrition and conscious habits

  • Incorporate red and dense foods: beets, strawberries, pomegranates, tomatoes, plant-based proteins.
  • Walk barefoot on earth or grass to reconnect with the Earth's energy field.
  • Practice routines and habits that give you structure: schedules, self-care, clear boundaries.

Ground yourself so you can bloom

Working on Muladhara means returning to the essential. It means recognizing that in order to fly, you first need to be firmly grounded in yourself.

When this chakra is activated, you regain the sense of belonging, of connection with your body and with life. You feel that there is a place in the world waiting for you... and that place begins within you.

Activating this chakra reminds you that you are held. That you don't need to run to belong -- just stop, breathe Muladhara, and come back to yourself.
